Teeing Off on the Edge: A Deep Dive into Rivers Edge Golf Club’s Par 3 Holes https://playriversedgegolf.com/teeing-off-on-the-edge-a-deep-dive-into-rivers-edge-golf-club-par-3-holes/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 16:22:04 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=5022 In the tapestry of a golf course, par 3 holes stand as miniature masterpieces, weaving together challenge, strategy, and beauty into a compact package. During the creation of Rivers Edge Golf Club, Arnold Palmer strategically designed four par 3 holes that perfectly blend the landscape with the challenges of the hole.

Despite their shorter distances, par 3 holes demand precision and finesse, offering golfers an opportunity to showcase their skills with every swing. Join us as we deep dive into the four par 3 holes you will enjoy during your round at Rivers Edge Golf Club.

Hole no. 5

Hole no. 5 is arguably one of the most picturesque holes at Rivers Edge Golf Club. It is the shortest of the par 3 holes at Rivers Edge, however it is also the most daunting. The Shallotte river marshland guards the sloped green, requiring golfers to carry the distance off the tee.

As you tee off of the elevated tee box, pay special attention to the wind at play, you may need to club up one or two to ensure you reach the green. The pin placement is another added challenge to this hole, a front pin placement can be hard to nail with the green sloping off to the front. If you play too much spin, you may find your ball donated to the marsh. Our expert advice to find success on hole no. 5 is to wisely select your club and commit to your swing.

Gold Tees: 135

Black Tees: 113

White Tees: 115

Green Tees: 83

Blue Tees: 59

Hole no. 8

Hole no. 8 is another breathtaking hole at Rivers Edge with the Shallotte River surrounding the back and sides of the green. It isn’t uncommon for golfers to see a boat fishing or cruising through the channel behind this hole.

A large greenside bunker on the left is a hazard you’ll want to avoid. The large green is a big target, but depending on where you land your ball it can also lead to long challenging putts. Another overlooked challenge resulted from the stunning backdrop is that your depth perception may be deceived, trust the yardage and fully commit on this tee shot.

Gold Tees: 190

Black Tees: 183

White Tees: 162

Green Tees: 139

Blue Tees: 118

Hole no. 12

Hole no. 12 has a landscape different from the rest, but is nonetheless extraordinary. Golfers face an uphill tee shot to this testing green, you may want to club up to achieve accuracy. Surrounded by the woods on both sides of this hole the playing field is narrow.

A good and confident bunker game can be the difference between a bogey and par on this hole with four large bunkers surrounding the green.

Gold Tees: 174

Black Tees: 169

White Tees: 142

Green Tees: 130

Blue Tees: 89

Hole no. 15

Hole no. 15 at Rivers Edge stands as a breathtaking testament to nature’s influence on the game of golf. Surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Shallotte River, hole no. 15 begins the final stretch of holes at Rivers Edge all along the river. These final holes are regarded by many as the four best finishing holes on the Grand Strand.

As players step onto the tee box on hole no. 15, they are greeted with the testing challenge of carrying over the Shallotte River. Just like the rest of the par 3 holes at Rivers Edge, accuracy, precision, and the correct club choice are required. A slightly hidden bunker on the right side of the green, leaves the safest route towards the left. The green on 15 is a large target, but with slopes and tricky breaks, landing on the green is only the first of challenges for this outstanding hole.

Gold Tees: 195

Black Tees: 185

White Tees: 155

Green Tees: 106

Blue Tees: 106

A round at Rivers Edge is nothing short of amazing and the par 3 holes are just the beginning. From their technical demands to their strategic design and natural beauty, these holes offer a captivating blend of challenge and reward that keeps golfers coming back for more. So, the next time you step up to a Par 3 tee box at Rivers Edge take a moment to appreciate the artistry and allure of these miniature marvels – and remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.

We can’t wait for you to experience the one of a kind destination of Rivers Edge Golf Club. Book your next round at Rivers Edge Golf Club today!

Planning a spring golf trip? Here’s why Rivers Edge is the perfect course to add to your Myrtle Beach golf trip. https://playriversedgegolf.com/planning-a-spring-golf-trip-heres-why-rivers-edge-is-the-perfect-course-to-add-to-your-myrtle-beach-golf-trip/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 15:16:28 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=5006 It’s time to start planning your spring golf trip to Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is the golf capital of the world and for good reason. With over 90 golf courses in the area, Myrtle Beach offers a golfing experience like no other. Although there is no “bad” time to visit Myrtle Beach, it’s commonly known that March 1st through May is often the ideal time for golf. The average daily high temperature during these months range from 64 to 79 degrees and they tend to be the driest months of the year. So, with warm weather, sunny days, and stunning courses there’s no place that compares for a spring golf trip then Myrtle Beach.

It can be hard when planning your golf trip to choose what courses to add to your agenda. One course that is a must-play among many yearly Myrtle Beach golf trip visitors is Rivers Edge Golf Club. Rivers Edge Golf Club is located a few miles across the South Carolina and North Carolina border in Shallotte, North Carolina. The course is considered one of the best among the Grand Strand and Myrtle Beach area and was named the 2023 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association.

You probably are wondering what makes Rivers Edge Golf Club a top tier course and why you need to add to your spring golf trip— Here are our top three reasons:

Skillfully Designed Arnold Palmer Signature Course

Rivers Edge Golf Club was designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 1999. The championship course sits along the bluffs and tidal marshes of the Shallotte River, and offers diverse challenges for all golf skill levels. Each hole at Rivers Edge was carefully crafted with precise attention to detail. The course features a strategic layout with every hole presenting a unique challenge. Palmer had a knack for seamlessly integrating his courses into the natural landscape and Rivers Edge is no exception. The visual masterpiece of Rivers Edge can be seen from every point of detail— bunker, tee box, hazard placement, etc.

Another design feature seen in all of Arnold Palmer’s courses is a signature design element. At Rivers Edge it’s a signature hole. One of the most talked about holes along the Grand Strand is number 9 at Rivers Edge, also known as “Arnie’s Revenge.” This Par 5 plays 540 yards from the black tees and requires perfectly executed shots from tee to green. It’s a hole that you will be talking about after round while sitting on the back porch sipping a cold beer.

Breathtaking Scenery & Atmosphere

It is no secret that Rivers Edge is one of the most scenic golf courses along the Grand Strand. The picturesque landscape of the marsh of the Shallotte River and Copas Lake add an extra layer of enjoyment to your golfing experience. There is no doubt that you will leave Rivers Edge with nothing less than lasting memories, a camera roll filled with stunning course photos, and numerous wildlife sightings (gators, birds, cranes, deer, and more).

Excellent Customer Service & Amenities

Rivers Edge Golf Club prides itself on being able to offer its guests the best customer service and golfing experience. Once a golfer sets foot into the gated community, their experience becomes our top priority. Our dedicated team is meticulously trained to anticipate and exceed your needs from the moment you arrive. Expect a warm and personalized welcome when you arrive this spring. Returning guests will experience an enhanced customer service different to previous years with new staff positions, course and clubhouse renovations, and amenities.

Rivers Edge Golf Club is becoming a premier golf course facility with top-of-the-line amenities being offered this spring. Including brand new golf carts installed with the latest GPS technology, newly renovated food and beverage offerings with on-course options, enhanced golf course conditions, and more.

It’s a spring season you won’t want to miss and a golf trip to remember!

Teeing Off the New Year Right: Tips to Ensure You New Year’s Golf Resolutions Stick https://playriversedgegolf.com/teeing-off-the-new-year-right-tips-to-ensure-you-new-years-golf-resolutions-stick/ Mon, 01 Jan 2024 13:04:37 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=4989 The new year is here and if you’re an avid golfer, more than likely you have made a resolution to improve one or more parts of your golf game or playing habits. Improving your golf game is a great goal to have, especially if you have big 2024 golf plans. Such as a trip to the golf capital of the world, Myrtle Beach, and a round at Rivers Edge Golf Club. However, actually making your goal a reality requires a clear plan and commitment.

To help you achieve your golfing goals, here are some valuable tips to ensure your New Year’s golf resolutions last beyond January.

Some common New Year’s goals we hear among our Rivers Edge team, members, and guests include:

– Improve my golf game

-Hit the ball farther

-Become more consistent

-Play more golf rounds

-Lower my score

All of these resolutions are great end goals to have, but they are vague and require more specifics to be achievable. For example, instead of saying “Improve my golf game,” break it down into tangible objectives such as “Lower my handicap by (X) amount of strokes.” This clarity will provide a clear path for your golf journey.

Once you have a clear, achievable, and specific goal it is important to plan out exactly how you will work to achieve your goal. Golf is a complex sport that requires drive, dedication, and persistence. You will need to design a plan that encompasses all the areas you are trying to achieve. It is important that you realize improving your game comes from consistent and specific practice.

For example, if you want to hit the ball farther off the tee, you will need to create a specific plan on how you will work towards that goal. To begin, you first need to learn what makes a ball go farther off the tee. The answer is simple: club head speed.

The next step in your plan would be learning what club head speed is and ways you can increase it. The best way to learn information about your goal is by investing in lessons from a qualified golf professional. Once you know strategies that will help assist you in reaching your goals, it is important to prioritize consistent practice.

Sticking with the example resolution of working to hit the ball farther off the tee, the golf professional at your club recommends that you start incorporating flexibility and mobility exercises into your weekly routine. In order to see actual results, you will need to be disciplined, completing these exercises on a regular basis. A consistent effort will contribute to reaching your goal much quicker, than sporadic, intense workout sessions on an inconsistent basis. A good way to do this is by setting a specific time each week you plan to stretch and work on mobility, or maybe you start going to a yoga class.

Another tip that will help you achieve your golf goals is to stay positive and patient. Progress in golf, as in any skill, takes time. It is important to understand that improvement may not happen overnight, and setbacks are a natural part of the learning process. Stay positive, celebrate small victories, and use setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. On top of this, don’t underestimate the importance of working on your short game. You probably have heard this statistic a time or two, but 60% of your game comes from 100 yards in. This is an important fact, especially if you’re looking to take a few strokes off your handicap. Investing time into practicing your putting, chipping, and pitching is the simplest and most practical way to do so.

By following these tips, you can set the stage for a year of significant improvement on the golf course. Our team at Rivers Edge is rooting for your golf success and hope that we can see you take on our course in the New Year. Remember, the journey to golf success is as rewarding as the destination, so enjoy every swing and savor the progress you make along the way.

Top 5 Most Difficult Shots at River’s Edge Golf Club https://playriversedgegolf.com/top-5-most-difficult-shots-at-rivers-edge-golf-club/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 16:29:30 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=4964 Widely known for its stunning scenic landscape and challenging golf course design, River’s Edge Golf Club consistently ranks among the most notable and difficult golf courses amidst the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach Golf courses.

Golf is a sport that demands precision, skill, and a deep understanding of the course at play. That’s why we recommend our golfers play the course multiple times for the best shot at a reputable round at River’s Edge.

River’s Edge is composed of difficult terrain with the Shallotte River, marshland, and/or water hazards coming into play on 15 of the 18 holes. The esteemed Arnold Palmer design features tight fairways, small tiered greens, and challenging sand bunkers. The course presents a comprehensive test of a player’s skills, blending distance control and precision throughout its 18 memorable holes.

While every shot in golf presents its own set of challenges, some shots stand out as particularly demanding. Here are the top 5 most difficult shots at River’s Edge Golf Club:

The second and third shot on Arnie’s Revenge – Hole #9.

Hole #9 is no doubt the hardest hole at River’s Edge and the way a golfer approaches this challenging hole can make all the difference. This Par 5 plays 540 yards from the black tees and 494 yards from the white tees.

After a smooth tee shot to the fairway on the left, the second shot leaves a golfer with a serious risk for reward decision— to go for the green or to play it a little safer. The risky second shot leaves around a 200 yard shot to the very narrow green. If you make it, you have a serious shot at eagle, if not you go back to the drop area 135 yards out and will be lucky to make par. The smart second shot is played toward the middle fairway bunker leaving you a wedge to the narrow and deep green. Although it sounds easy in writing, the accuracy and skill required to nail these two shots make them the hardest shots at River’s Edge.

The tee shot on hole #15.

Hole #15 is a par 3 playing 185 yards from the black tees and 155 yards from the white tees. With an entire carry over the marshland of the Shallotte river, this shot is one of the hardest at River’s Edge. Our advice to overcoming this hole: Choose the right club and ensure you account for any wind, knock it close and make the putt. Sounds simple right?

The tee shot on hole #16.

If you didn’t think the hole before was hard, don’t worry the tee shot on #16 will make you sweat. With a tight fairway that slopes towards the marsh, accuracy is essential off the tee. For the best results on this blind tee shot, aim to the right edge of the bunker on the left and you’ll drive up to find your ball in the middle of the fairway.

The second shot on hole #6.

Hole #6 may look like an innocent par four, but many argue it is one of the most underestimated holes on the course. With a winding fairway and deep green, distance control and accuracy is a must on this hole. Your club choice and accuracy is crucial off the tee with water 184 to 294 yards on the right, depending on your tee box. A tee shot to the right side of the fairway short of the water is the smart play.

Afterwards comes the harder shot, a large bunker guards the left side of the green. Golfers must commit to the shot, otherwise it will be a tough up and down from the bunker. The deep green can make the pin placement multiply the difficulty on this already challenging hole.

The second shot on hole #11.

Hole #11 is the second handicap at River’s Edge. A difficult par 5 measuring 485 yards from the black tees and 455 yards from the white tees. Surprise, surprise another tight long fairway and peninsula green. You can see a pattern along this Arnold Palmer design course. After a challenging tee shot to the right of the fairway avoiding the long sand trap on the left, the next shot is crucial to making birdie or par.

The fairway tightens and turns ahead, a second shot short of the bunkers on the right will leave you with a nice look at the peninsula green. Be careful to choose the right club and hit it straight because it’s no fun playing from the bunkers or worse hitting left into the Shallotte River. The last challenge on this hole is the audience you may have watching. Composed of a long-tailed, large mouth creature with four legs, hole #11 has the most alligator sightings on the course.

There you have it…the list of holes that have led to many big numbers on scorecards at River’s Edge Golf Club. The key to mastering these holes sounds simple: hit it straight, hit it precise, and knock it stiff. However as any golfer knows, that’s not always how it works out. The best way to master the course at River’s Edge is to play smart and limit large risks. You’ll see a lower round playing more conservative and precise than trying to go for every green.

Mastering the Challenges of Winter Play On The Golf Course https://playriversedgegolf.com/mastering-the-challenges-of-winter-play-on-the-golf-course/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 14:34:32 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=4954 Fall golf has been in full swing at River’s Edge Golf Club, but as the morning temperatures begin to drop, it won’t be long until we enter the winter golf season. The winter golf season is an amazing experience at River’s Edge Golf Club because of its ideal location and climate. North Carolina winters have fluctuating temperatures offering both warm and cold days. We are proud to offer our golfers year round golfing opportunities. Many golfers see the winter golf season as a time to improve their skills while enjoying a unique experience on the course.

The winter golf season along the Grand Strand near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a desired experience with quieter courses, lower costs, and stunning natural beauty. Keep reading to learn about how you can master the challenges of winter play at River’s Edge, from adapting to the changing weather to honing in your game.

Master Tip #1 — Dress For Success

Playing golf in the winter requires a thoughtful approach to clothing, similar to fall, but to a greater extent. Read our “Perfect Fall Golfing Guide” article to learn more about the importance  of selecting the right golf gear for seasons.

During winter the temperatures can change drastically day to day or even morning to afternoon.  Staying warm and comfortable is essential for an enjoyable round. At River’s Edge Golf Club we can have both warm sunny days or colder windy days. Consider these tips to ensure you stay comfortable through your entire 18 hole round.

Layer Up: Begin with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. If it is cold, add an insulating layer to trap in heat, such as a fleece lined quarter zip or a thermal vest. Finish off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect you from the elements. Dressing in layers allows you to quickly adjust throughout the day.

If it’s cold don’t forget the head and hands: Wear a warm, moisture-wicking hat and thermal gloves to keep your extremities warm. Having cold fingers can seriously impact your grip and control.

Thermal Socks and Shoes: Invest in waterproof golf shoes and thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry throughout your round.

Master Tip #2  — Adjust Your Game Expectations

Winter conditions can potentially affect your golf game, so it’s essential to set realistic   expectations and adapt your playing style. You may have to adjust your game day to day depending on the weather.

Shorter Distances: Cold temperatures reduce ball compression, resulting in shorter distances in your drives and irons. Choose your clubs accordingly and don’t get frustrated if the ball doesn’t go as far as it does on warmer days. Rather than focusing on distance during these months, choose to focus on alignment and control.

Adjusted Putts: The greens in winter can differ drastically from course to course. At River’s Edge our greens tend to be the fastest in winter months. Our winter course management is exceptional, so you can count on having amazing course conditions throughout the entire winter season.

Mind The Ball: Golf balls can become harder in the cold, which may affect the way they respond to your shots. You may want to use softer golf balls designed for colder temperatures to maintain feel and control on chillier days. Check out our Pro Shop before your round for a variety of golf balls each designed for specific conditions.

Master Tip #3 — Improve Your Game

Winter golf provides an opportunity to work on specific aspects of your game. Consider using this quieter time to improve your skills before the busy spring season.

Practice Your Short Game: Focus on chipping and putting, as these are vital aspects of the game and can also be honed indoors or on the practice green. If you choose to play in winter, our insider trick is to not look too deep into your score, but instead see how many up and downs or putts you have during your round. This can show you what aspects of your game need the most work.

Analyze Your Swing: Film your swings and review them to identify areas for improvement. Use this time to make any necessary adjustments to your technique.

The winter season is a great time to visit River’s Edge Golf Club. Make the most of the season by mastering the challenges of winter play with our tips and ticks. Don’t let the changing weather keep you off the fairways — gear up, embrace the challenges, and enjoy the beauty of a winter round of golf at River’s Edge Golf Club.

River’s Edge Golf Club Perfect Fall Golfing Gear Guide https://playriversedgegolf.com/rivers-edge-golf-club-perfect-fall-golfing-gear-guide/ Wed, 18 Oct 2023 13:10:23 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=4922 Choosing The Right Golf Gear For Fall Weather

As the days grow shorter and the air becomes crisper at River’s Edge Golf Club, our guests eagerly anticipate the magic of fall golfing. The autumn season along the Grand Strand brings with it cooler temperatures and the opportunity to perfect your swing without the intense summer heat. However, to fully enjoy your golfing experience at River’s Edge Club it’s essential to choose the right golf gear and attire for fall weather. Here are our key considerations and essential items to ensure you have the perfect fall round at River’s Edge.

1. Dress in layers.

Fall weather along the North Carolina coast can be unpredictable, with chilly mornings and mild afternoons. Dressing in layers allows you to quickly adapt to the fluctuating temperatures. Our perfect layering guide begins with a base layer of a moisture-wicking golf polo. This keeps sweat away from your skin, in the case it does heat up. On top of that we recommend a lightweight insulating layer, such as a quarter zip or fleece sweater. This layer will keep your core warm and help ensure your back and body stays warm and relaxed while swinging. To top it off, add a wind-resistant waterproof jacket. It is important to ensure that your clothing doesn’t restrict your swing, so opt for stretchy and breathable fabrics designed for golfers. Our Pro Shop is stocked with all the fall weather essentials from reputable golf brands. Come check out our new trendy selection before or after your next round!

2. Wear Golf Pants.

While shorts may have been your go-to golf attire during the hot Carolina summer, consider switching to golf pants or cold-weather trousers in the fall. These garments will provide better insulation and protect you against frigid winds. Staying warm and comfortable while golfing during the fall helps you maintain focus on your game and ensures a more enjoyable round.

3. Pick the Right Shoes.

Fall golf often means dealing with dewy grass and, occasionally, rainy days. There is nothing worse than having cold, wet feet by the fifth hole of your round. Waterproof golf shoes are a must in the fall to keep your feet dry and comfortable for your entire round. Look for shoes with waterproof membranes and good grip to ensure stability in these wet conditions. A little insider tip we have for you is to carry an extra pair, or two, of socks in your bag, just in case.

4. Pack a few cold-weather accessories, just in case.

You never know when the wind can change, so we recommend packing a few essential cold-weather accessories in your bag in case a day is a little colder than expected. It is worthwhile to invest in a quality golf beanie or earmuffs, along with thermal insulated golf gloves. If you prefer not to swing while wearing a glove on each hand, we recommend putting hand warmers in your pockets for in-between shots. It’s also a good idea to carry an umbrella to protect from unexpected fall showers.

5. Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Just because it’s not summer anymore doesn’t mean you should ditch the sun protection. Fall sun can be deceiving, and the UV rays can still be harmful towards your skin and eyes. Don’t forget to wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen to protect yourself while you’re out on the course.

Fall golf offers a unique and peaceful experience, but it requires the right gear and attire to keep you comfortable. Dressing in layers, investing in waterproof gear, and packing cold-weather accessories are some of the essentials to consider before your next fall golf round. With the right gear, you can make the most of the beautiful autumn days and continue to enjoy your time on the golf course. So gear up, make your tee time, and embrace the beauty of fall golf at River’s Edge Golf Club.

Playing the tough par 3 12th Hole https://playriversedgegolf.com/playing-the-tough-par-3-12th-hole/ Thu, 25 Oct 2018 00:40:26 +0000 https://playriversedgegolf.com/?p=2183 Playing the 12th hole is a very deceiving challenge here at Rivers Edge.  This relatively short par 3 has seen some very big numbers written on scorecards after playing it.  Any par 3 is tough when players cannot see the putting surface from the tee box but No. 12 seems to be tougher than most.  Today we are going to give some tips on how to play this tough little test of a golf hole so that golfers won’t have to write 5s and 6s or worse down for their score on this gem of a par 3.

From the tips this hole plays as long as 178 yards and it can be as short as 85 yards from the front tees.  As most golfers play the white tees we will look at this hole from there.  Playing anywhere from 130 to 145 yards from the white tees No.12 seems harmless on the card.  Wrong.  This hole is uphill and always plays longer than the yardage indicates.  Generally, it is a one club difference, but when the pin is in the back of the green it can be 2 clubs longer.  That is one of the reasons this hole is tough, club selection is difficult.

Bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.  The bunkers in front and to the left and right of the green are deep and intimidating.  When golfers find themselves down in one of these bad boys they are almost certainly looking at a big score.  The trap behind the green is large and leave players faced with a slight downhill sand shot if the flag is middle or front.  YIKES!!  Nobody wants that shot.  So club selection and hitting this green off the tee is of paramount importance if golfers want to make par.

Par is not guaranteed once on the putting surface off the tee either.  The back to front slope and curved left side make for some tough putts to get into the hole or at least close.  Any golfer that walks off this hole with a par or birdie has done some seriously good work!  Their playing partners should congratulate them on the achievement.
