On May 15 and 16 the Rivers Edge Golf Club hosted its Annual Member/Member Tournament. The gross score winners in the Men’s Division with a score of 141 were Ron Johnson and Bob Fraser. In the Ladies Division the gross winners were Maralee Martin and Shirley Arnold with a score of 161. Net score winners in the Men’s Division with a score of 129 went to Pete Rickler and Bill Brock. In the Ladies Division the low net score went to Linda Lynes and Julie Sande with a score of 129.

Sixty-eight (68) residents and property owners (48 men and 20 ladies) participated in the popular annual event. Participants were divided into two teams (Red and White). The twenty-seven (27) hole format for the competition was nine holes each of Two-man Captain and Mate, Two-man Modified Alternate Shot and Singles Head-to-Head match play. This year, led by Captains Sandy Campbell and Richard Raad, the Red Team was victoriously outscoring the White Team by a score of 36.5 to 26.5.

The Foursome for Heroes program is sponsored by Operation North State. Five W/W and D/Vets participated along with two ONS volunteers and five REVA members. A fun day of golf was had by all, followed by lunch and camaraderie at The Double Eagle Grill. The five Heroes were presented REVA Honor Coins, Poppy Pins, and golf towels from REGC. This is REVA’s third Foursome for Heroes Golf Outing and we hope to have more outings in the future.

Four (4) Wounded Warriors and two (2) representatives of Operation North State (ONS) participated in the outing along with six (6) members of REVA. Foursomes for Heroes is a program organized by ONS for Wounded Warriors to enjoy a round of golf with fellow veterans. Golf was followed by lunch and camaraderie. Each of the Wounded Warriors was given a REVA Honor Coin to thank them for their military service. The total number of years serviced by the four Wounded Warriors was more than 80 years!

Despite the restriction, as a result of Covid 19, our resilient Members and Staff were bound to find a way to keep our major events intact and moving forward while complying with mandates. Throughout the event the only real significant changes made were the inability to have a formal awards ceremony with dinner, as the event is accustomed to. As for the competition itself and the spectacular course conditions, our members would not be denied a fantastic major!

With the cancelation of a formal dinner our Double Eagle Grille still managed to find a way to compliment the event through some tasty food, served via boxed lunches during play. Picnic Food was the theme: Kim’s Famous Fried chicken, Potato Salad, Broccoli Salad and Cobbler with ice cream.

The winners of our 36 hole tournament were;

Men’s Division= Kurt Reynolds/Rob Pick with a net score of 135

Women’s Division= Shirley Arnold/Sandy Campbell with a net score of 139

Here at Rivers Edge Golf Club and at many other golf courses in the area the use of golf carts has been limited to one person per cart for several weeks. In an effort extend alternate ways to enhance customers safety we have temporarily permitted the usage of private golf cars to Rivers Edge residents and walking.

One member took on the challenge and has yet to look back! He has been walking the hilly and long course since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place on March 25, 2020. Larry plays on average three to four rounds per week, compiling eight to ten miles per round depending on how well or poorly he was playing.

For his dedication we wanted to recognize this very special person with the Rivers Edge Golf Club IRONMAN Award.

Please congratulate Mr. Larry Shapiro!! We salute you sir and are honored to have you as a member!
